Lisbon

Pictured at the top is São Jorge Castle built by the Moors in the 10th century occupying a commanding hilltop over the historic center of the Portuguese city of Lisbon and Tagus River. Lisbon and neighboring Belem, were built with riches from the spice trade due to Portuguese naval prowess and global explorations. Lisbon is a city rich in history - and also rich in delicious pastries filled with custard.

Kasbah Amridil, Skoura 17th c.

The restored Kasbah Amridil actually appeared on Morocco's 50-dirham bank note. Traditional kasbah life hasn't changed much over the centuries, with large hand-carved door locks and giant dagger-like keys, an olive-oil press, bread ovens, and the first compost toilet on the top floor whose basic design is now reappearing. The stairs are made at uneven heights and there is a safe room with a low doorway to defend against attacking tribes. Still owned by the same Berber family, forty members once lived in this relatively luxurious dwelling.

Fès, UNESCO World Heritage Site

From the doors of the Royal Palace to the medina, Fès is steeped in history that lives on to the day. A man sells camel meat while working on his smartphone. A traditional Moroccan ceramic tagine is made by hand. Unlike India, the busy mosque is not open to tourists but we could peer in the doorway.
